Offered is a very RARE hardbound book entitled " PROSE AND POETRY", written and published by CAPTAIN AMARIAH LAKE of Pleasantville, New Jersey, circa 1905 103 pages. Background: AMARIAH LAKE (1836-1909 ) was a decendant of one of the first families of South Jersey. In his early years Amariah was a successful sea captain in the coastal trade. Later, he went into the lumberyard business. The Pleasantville, NJ Lake family clan was involved in many trades and industry. Beginning in the early 1820's the Lakes were involved in oyster harvesting and trade. They were involved in building the first Turnpike to Atlantic City. Simon Lake Senior and three of his sons purchased Pecks Beach and created the religious resort town of Ocean City. Simon Lake Jr. was the inventor of the first modern submarine. The whole Lake clan was very inventive and ingenious, patenting many valuable and useful devices. Of special note AMARIAH LAKE invented and patented an amusement ride called the "Haunded Swing". As a boy growing up in the early 1960's I recall this ride on Gillians Fun Deck. Patrons entered a small room and sat down on a porch swing. The room door closed and soon the room began to turn back and forth, gaining speed. Room contents, pictures, etc were secured to the walls and floor. The spinning walls gave the illusion that you were spinning around. read more
