This listing is for a pair of elegant, antique, ca. 1870's PROVIDENTIAL TILE WORKS tiles. This pair of elegant tiles are often called Dame and Rip Van Winkle and are in excellent condition without chips, cracks or nicks. T is crazing indicative of the Majolica glaze of this era. These 6" square tiles are framed in a wooden hand-carved frames with plaster embellishment for an overall size of 7 7/8" square. These frames look to be original to the tiles, although t is some glue residue on the back of the tiles may indicate that the tile were glued elsew first. The back of these rare tiles are marked PROVIDENTIAL TILE WORKS, TRENTON N.J. with a "C" and IIV with 4 dots below. A "7" with a circle is on the male piece and and "8" with a cirlcle, is on the lady. Both portrait-type tiles are molded in high relief. The frames have a few tiny chips of plaster missing (see first photo). The male is also identified as Michaelangelo's MOSES. In addition, the initials "TCB"? in scrolled cursive is written in pencil on the back of the lady. These tiles have been attributed to Isaac Broome, a well-known sculptor and ceramic designer for Trenton, Providential and other US companies. The Dame is much like Broome's Parthenia portrait tile. These are not signed by Broome, but many of his pieces were not signed including Parthenia. E-mails are welcome. read more
