Staffordshire Childs Red Biscuit Jar or Sugar PUNCH & JUDY Charles Allerton & Sons Staffordshire England c 1890 This is a whimsical childs transfer printed biscuit jar or sugar box, circa 1890.Originally part of a complete children's miniature tea set, the barrel shaped pot stands about 4 1/2" tall to the top of the fancy finial with a scalloped rim and applied handle. The color is a rich cherry or country red. It features the fabulous characters from the Pulcinella puppet show (dating back to Italy in the early 17th century) of Punch, Judy and baby, along with a fanciful pipe-smoking frog. The images is repeated on each side of the pot. These fanciful characters are surrounded by an aesthetic display of flowers and geometrical whimsies. The handles have a geometric-floral border trim. The pattern name is "Punch". It was made by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The base is marked with C Allerton & Sons England and the pattern name. The biscuit jar and lid are in good condition with no chips cracks or repairs. Minor tiny glaze flakes and the start of an aged hair line consistent with age and prior use.
