Full page ad from an 1893 Medical Journal Patent Medicines by Rio Chemical Company, St Louis Mo. 10" x 6.75" At the time this ad ran in medical journals, there were no laws governing quack medicines. I've spent 30 years studying the history of medicines by reading old medical books and journals and cross-referencing with advertising and pharmacopeias. It's been a fascinating hobby!Rio Chemical Co was famous for three of its most popular patent medicines:Celerina, a nerve tonic and stimulant with Coca. Celery,Kola. and ViburnumAletris Cordial, a uterine tonic with its main ingredient being Aletris Farinosa, or True Unicorn. It also contained several other herbs and since it was pre-government regulation, there was probably plenty of alcohol and opium.S. H. Kennedy's Extract of Pinus Canadensis, a muscous astringent used for everything from diarrhea to gonorrhea! It allegedly had no alcohol. The verso (back side) has two half-page ads for Reed and Carnrick's Lacto Preparata, a nutritional supplement for children and Kumysgen another of their supplental foods to nourish the sick. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Please try to make payment within 24 hours.
