This fine oil portrait dates from around 1890. It measures a good sized 46 by 67 cm (18 by 26.5 inches) and is set inside a slightly larger (51 by 71 cm - 20 by 28 inches) gilt frame which I believe to be the original. There is a signature verso - seems to be WOODS. There are a number of listed artists painting around this time so it is difficult to tell which it may be but the quality suggests it was not painted by an amateur. It is in very good condition for its age - a small but stable old tear to the background being the only scar - but really is otherwise ready to hang up and enjoy.
