Quality, Unusual-Sized Antique Map, City of New York This very high quality folding map entitled "New York" was engraved by Wagner and Debes of Leipzig, Germany, and published in 1909 by Charles Scribner's Sons of New York. Many items on eBay are described as "rare." Few of them really are. This map is unique because not many survived due to its unusual size. The map was unfolded for use; consequently most have been torn. This map is an original relief line engraving, NOT a reprint or reproduction. As part of an early handbook for travelers, the map showed city streets, roads, prominent buildings, parks, schools and other places of interest. The map has bright, masculine colors and very, very unusual shape (5 3/4" wide x 19 1/2" high, inside the border). The engraving is on light weight but good quality paper. Travelers used the book as a ready reference for sight-seeing. The condition of the map is very good, with only one small repair on the reverse of the map with Filmoplast acid-free archival tape. Some of the interesting places on the map are: Tammany Hall; USA Bldg.; U.S. Barge Office; Brooklyn Bridge; Bank of America; Home Life Bldg.; Criminal Courts; Thalia Theatre; Mercantile Exchange; Washington Market; Stock Exchange; Tombs; Fulton Ferry; elevated railroads; subways; Idiots Asylum; Columbia University; Progress Club; read more
