D.R. BARTON COOPER'S RARE HOWELING KNIFE. 4 3/8" BLADE. The howel section of the inside of a barrel was the smoothed area where the groove for the lid was cut. In England, the knife that cut the howel was called a jigger. In the US it was called a howeling knife. In the US there also was a similar knife, called a chamfering knife, that cut the chime or top chamfer. But it did not have the curve of the howeling knife. This knife has a sharpedge, a fine walnut handle, and is made by David Barton from Rochester, NY.,one of the premier edge tool makers, especially of cooper's tools. He stamped most of his logos with "1832", the date that the company was formed. Remnants of the date can be seen with a glass. The handle is tight with a tight iron ferrule. It is tanged, as was the early way. It has no checks or chips. The edge is reasonably sharp with no nicks. The hardened steel edge is forged to the top iron on a diagonal to give better mating. Only the better knives had this feature. It is a fine example of one of the tools that made this country's early barrels.Overall -14". Handle -- 7".
