AT AUCTION are two brand new Radiosonde weather instruments. The first device (known in Germany as a wettersonde) is a Type E084 temperatursonde manufactured by Graw Radiosondes GmbH & Co., Nuremberg, Germany, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of radiosondes. It comes complete with Operations Manual. The second device is a Vaisala RS80 radiosonde with built-in codeless 8-channel digital global positioning system ( GPS ) receiver. Viasala, headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, is the world's oldest and largest manufacturer of radiosondes. A Specifications Sheet for the RS80 will be included. I have taken these apart to show the main components; yours is brand-new and unopened, as shown in the lead-off photo. In operation, both devices are carried aloft under a helium- or hydrogen-filled weather balloon. A standard 9-volt battery (not included but readily available) powers the Grew radiosonde which gathers data on temperature and transmits it back to a ground receiving station at 403 MHz during the ascent. The Viasala operates on a water-activated 18-volt battery (included) and transmits data on temperature, humidity, and pressures, also at 403 MHz. When a radiosonde reaches its maximum altitude, which may be over 100,000 feet, the balloon bursts and a parachute carries the radiosonde and expended balloon back to Earth.
