This is a Manton lockplate made for a Manton contract musket Model 1861. This is one of the rarest if not the rarest lockplate for the 1861 contract muskets. Both the Manton name and the date are engraved in the lockplate. Most of them have a stamped date of 1862 not the engraved style. The exact amount of these muskets that were manufactured is unknown but likely well under 2,000. Modern research shows that these muskets were manufactured by Whitney and he engraved the name Manton on them to increase interest in these arms. Thanks for your interest in this item.
