is a very rare amber milk bottle, from Rutland Vermont. It has been rumored that at one time Vermont had more cows than people. Vermont wasn't always a dairy state as it was a sheep state for many years during the 1800's. The mountains were not as forested as they are now as most people cleared the hilldsides of trees to raise sheep. When the state changed to dairy farming, little homestead dairy farms popped up all over the state creating a huge industry. Not global as was the sheep industry but local and abundant. Originally people could buy milk from farmers directly. They would dip out the milk into a container the consumer would bring with him/her. Eventually, milk was distributed by creameries and delivered door to door in bottles which were reused again and again. At some point the dairy industry for some reason tried selling milk in Amber bottles. It was short lived as production costs were higher than regular clear glass. Some Ambers were actually chocolate milk. As the dairy and Johnson industries grew, these highly distributed bottles were scratched and pitted from the constant re-use and washing. This bottle must have been plucked from the lot when produced. It doesn't have a mark on it. Even the base is clean of marks. Highly unusual for a publically distributed dairy bottle. The Pyro is immaculate and t is no hazing. read more
