(More pictures and full specification below) This large and beautiful polychrome cabinet plate or charger was made by the firm of S Hancock & Sons (Potters) Ltd, of Stoke-on-Trent , between 1935 and 1937. The soft pastel floral design is an example of the company's rarely seen 'Lagoon Ware', under the Corona Ware label, which I think may have been designed by Molly Hancock, the daughter of Jabez Hancock. Lagoon ware was first issued in 1935, and the company closed two years later, so the design would have had a short production run, which accounts for its rarity. The 3-D relief-moulded, subtle matte-glazed style is typical of the period, and probably reflects the influence of popular period designers such as Charlotte Rhead, being similar in texture and colouring. The hand-painted plate has two holes in the base rim to hold a string for hanging (which is still attached), and was obviously intended for display rather than everyday use. S Hancock & Sons (Potters) Ltd The company was founded by Sampson Hancock, a prominent Wesleyan, in 1857 and his brother Benjamin. In 1881 the partnership was dissolved and became Sampson Hancock and Sons. The company were earthenware manufacturers at Tunstall from.1857 to 1870, then at other works in Stoke and then Hanley. It was a relatively small enterprise, employing around 150 people. Sampson Hancock died in 1900 and was succeeded in the business by his sons, Jabez, Harry and Arthur. The company produced tablewares and fancies for the popular market - its main income being from semi-porcelain and earthenware tablewares, toilet wares, vases and vitreous hotel wares. Many of the products, including ironstone china, were for export markets. After WW1 the company increased its production of ornamental and decorative wares. These included children's wares and doll's heads. Boxed teasets for children were being produced by 1917 featuring popular nursery rhymes and pictures of children. Two designers of this type of ware were Molly Hancock and Edith Gater. The company was renamed S. Hancock & Sons (Potters) Ltd. in 1935. It closed in 1937, having been put into receivership. Hancock pottery is now widely collected, especially for their art deco ranges of Morris Ware, Rubens Ware and Titian Ware. (With thanks to the Potteries website.) Details, condition, marks and spec... The plate measures about 28 cm/11" across and weighs 802 gms/1lb 12oz unwrapped; I estimate the final packaged weight at around 1400 gms. It is marked on the base with the Corona Ware Hancock & Son mark, over Lagoon ware, and a decorator's mark. The plate is in superb condition with no crazing, wear or flaws and no damage at all. It has obviously been kept unused and on display for most of its life (see photos below).
