I am sure these are from France for several reasons. The marble bases, nice soft black with dark jade green veining, are european and from either Belgium or France. And the metal appears to be regule, the French spelter metal. And they are the right age and style, pure art deco, circa 1925. They originally had a verdigris bronze finish of which much is gone. The dogs have no damage and the bookends measure 5 inches long by 4 inches high and weigh 5 pounds. The marble bases have a few chips on the corners but no cracks and a nice intact surface. These are bulldogs and very unusual for French bookends, they are not French bulldogs, but either Boston Terriers, pugs or English bulldogs. They have the shorter ears and fierce pushed in pug type muzzle, and stubby tail and strong, strong body. They have that traditional bulldog collar with brass studs, so masculine. But these have that nice French touch, a ribbon or bow on the back of each collar!!! Original screws and traditional and very old French baize green paper on the base. Guaranteed old, genuine and original. Please see my other auctions for more antique and vintage cast metal bookends and doorstops that I will combine on shipping whenever possible. |
