This is one of the last shells from a HUGE, 30 to 40 year old collection of seashells that belonged to my uncle. A rare and beautiful shell. A GREAT GIFT FOR THAT SHELL COLLECTOR WHO HAS EVERYTHING!! My uncle was an avid diver and collector of shells. He travelled extensively, diving and gathering shells in many locations around the world. The collection has been stored since the early 70's. Most were collected between 1960 and 1972. This gaza was collected during that time and comes from the Gulf of Mexico. The gazas were all stored with operculum and stuffed with felt. Very carefully preserved. They will need cleaning to reveal their natural lustre, since these still have periostracum. This is a such a pretty shell. It is about 40mm in diameter. The research I have done seems inconclusive as to whether Superba and Olivacea are two different classes. But I am pretty sure it is one of those or both? It is beautiful greenish color with a light pink inrridescence, primarily at the spire. The only collection data I have for it is that it is a gaza from the Gulf of Mexico. I have quite a few of them that were kept in an old box very carefully stored, but only marked as to that they are Gazas and the two locations. Winning bidder may choose to purchase more, if desired. They are all almost identical in color and size. It is a very read more
