Item Description : RARE "B.E.R.R.", believed to be Brooklyn Elevated Railroad brakeman's railroad lantern made by R.R. Signal Lamp and Lantern, with clear unmarked glass globe. Back on eBay and continuing with "Round 4" with this lantern from my late father's railroadianna collection, and one of the items that I am "thinning out". This lantern is a rare one from the collection...and in extraordinary condition. It is completely clean and solid, with no discernable rust and no dents whatsoever. The only "defect", other than normal wear and tear from aging, is the surface which seems to have little droplettes of white paint on the top. The fount is clean and odor free, and has a new, unused wick with wick height adjustor that is operable. The very top of the chimney on the lantern has embossed lettering for the manufacturer in fine print: "R. R. Signal Lamp and Lantern Co." and "New York", with even finer, stamped in patent information inside of that. Further down on the roof of the lantern are the embossed letters "B.E.R.R." I did an extensive on-line search for those reporting marks, and learned of two in the United States: one was for a shortline in the desert southwestern U.S., and the other was for the Brooklyn Elevated Railroad. As my late father's railroad collection was principally the NYO&W and other northeastern U.S. prototypes, with just a handful of exceptions for other roads no further west than Chicago, my money's on the Brooklyn Elevated. The lantern otherwise has no other markings at all. The clear glass globe has no etched or embossed lettering of any kind...and also has no chips or cracks or scratches and is in absolutely mint condition as are all the globes in lanterns I post on eBay. My late father's process was to take railroad lanterns apart and bathe them in a diluted lye bath for a few days to get the crud and rust off of them, later rinsing them completely. Once they were air dried, and realizing that metal rusts from the inside out, he coated the inside of the founts with melted paraffin wax to form a moisture barrier. Outside, they usually got a coat of clear lacquer sprayed on to preserve the cleaned finish. His written notes of detailed records kept did not include this lantern (his notes end with #87) . In looking hard at it, I do not believe that it went through his standard process. Still, I will assure you that this lantern is in great shape and will last! The photography does not do this lantern justice. But, take my word for it (check my feedback for veracity), this is an extraordinarily nice railroad lantern and, due to its distinctive prototype, will be a valuable addition to any collector of railroad lanterns or anyone who enjoys quality railroadianna.
