anonymous sixth plate half-length portrait with inscription of reverse of plate Thaddeus Stevens Congressman, housed in full floral embossed case.Pennsylvania Congressman Thaddeus Stevens (1792-1868) and Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner were leaders of the Radical Republicans before, during and after the American Civil War. Stevens was a firebrand abolitionist who was an active member of the Underground Railroad and devoted most of his energies in opposing the expansion and even the continuation of slavery in America.
