RARE EARLY VICTORIAN SERPENT SNAKE MOURNING BROOCH PIN On offer is this most unusual early Victorian mourning brooch. The brooch is surrounded by an entwined serpent, with tail in mouth. This was used by the Victorians to symbolise eternity. The brooch is a gilded base metal and the body of the snake has a wonderful scaly texture. In the centre is a glass compartment which is quite unusual. It appears to have been painted (originally) with a black outer, gold and white inner, with criss cross lines on it!? Clearly it has always been like this but I have never seen another like it. Measurements: 2.6cm by 1.7cm. Original tube hinge, 'c' catch and extended pin in good working order. Overall condition good for a brooch of approx 165/170 years of age. T is wear to the gilt at the back but this is not very obvious against the colour of the base metal. Please see photos of this very unusual mourning piece for further detail. A lovely collectable. Like antique jewellery? Then check out my other items !
