This is a very old and unusual INK WELL. It appears to be of the CIVIL WAR PERIOD. It may be a field desk accessory. I have never seen one. It is round about the size of a silver dollar. It is has the smallest purple glass well you ever saw. Measuring just 1 1/4 inches in height it is in very nice condition with some paint loss. The button opens and closes just like it should and two more hold the lid on the glass well. This is a very nice old item no matter w it came from. I found it in Bedford Virginia so if it is military it is probably confederate. Interesting to say the least. Buyer pays $3.00 domestic shipping and handling. International S&H will be more.
