A large antique wood carving, part of the decorated front or backside of a wagon. Oak or olive? I am not quite sure. It is a tough and heavy kind of wood. Below the frieze with figures and animals t is a text: PALAZZOLO . VINCENZO COMISO. Palazzolo could be a family name, but more likely it is the name of a town in Sicily (Italy): Palazzolo Acreide, province Syracusa. Vincenzo Comiso must have been the owner of the wagon. The carving is of the appealing "primitive" folk art kind and was once covered with bright polychrome painting. Remains of the original polychromy are still visible in places. We see two male nude figures with trumpets to the sides, two lions with eagles on their backs, two fish, in the centre a human head with three running legs below the lower part of a crown. The flat reverse was also painted: with leaves and fruit (oranges?). Date: 18th century. Length: 42,5 cms (nearly 16 3/4 inches). Height: 13 cms (nearly 5 1/8 inches). Widest depth: 5,9 cms (approx. 2 5/16th inches). Weight: approx. 1200 grammes. Condition as described and as shown in the pictures. No wurms!!!! Please ask your questions prior to making your bid. The reserve price will not be disclosed before end of auction. I guarantee authenticity and condition as described. Your purchase(s) will be packed and shipped with utmost care. Please make read more
