While this isn't toleware or really even folk art, since this beautiful girl was painted by a toleware/folk art artist, I have listed it under these categories to hopefully make it easy to find for the Ompir admirers.This haunting portrait of a young girl is a beautifully executed watercolor by Peter Ompir, more famous as a folk artist. It is known that Ompir trained as a fine artist and started his career as a portrait artist. However, once the Great Depression hit people were no longer able to afford custom handpainted portraits and he turned to painting functional items and had huge success in this area. Based on this history, I believe this painting is from the 1920s to 1930s. Though it is known that Peter Ompir did portrait work prior to his folk art, this is the only portrait I have ever seen. It is a very loose watercolor style with almost impressionistic edges--no hard edges in this portrait, even the eyes and mouth are soft appearing. The painting is well attached and t is no bubbling or lifting of the paper--it may have been painted right onto the backing, but I don't want to disturb the painting to determine if this is the case. The painting measures approximately 10" across by 12-1/2" high. Including the mat, it overall measures 16-1/4" across by 19-3/4" high.
