Offered is a great and very rare three light pierced tin candle lantern dating circa 1760-1820. This great lantern retains original wavy glass in two of the windows, the third contains a piece of old (but not as old) replacement glass. Making this example even more special are the pierced swags around the cone at top. One door opens to access the removable candle cup, the other two are stationary. This design was a big improvement over the straight pierced lanterns that are so common, because this design actually allowed the light to shine throught the windows--being just as safe to use, but vastly more efficient in terms of available light. Found in New Jersey, this American example measures 12 inches tall to the top of the chimney, 5 inches wide at the base, and the hanging ring is 4 1/2 inches wide. Overall condition is excellent and original with two minor exceptions. The lantern was blackened some time long ago, and the hanging ring has been reattached with a piece of modern tin wire. These often broke and are a good indicator of real age. When the ring became detached, the small smoke bell was lost. Still a great, very rare and attractive early American lighting device. Offered with a low starting bid and a very reasonable reserve. Thanks for looking and good luck bidding!
