Rare Savinelli Sandblasted Autograph 6 Estate Pipe Rare Sandblasted Autograph 6! Welcome! Today we have for your consideration a rare, beautifully sandblasted, Savinelli Autograph, with a one-knuckle bamboo shank extension--grade stamped 6. Yes that’s right, I am describing a sandblasted Autograph 6! The Autograph series is the top of the line for Savinelli freehand pipes. The smooth finished pipes (and "smoothes" with sandblasted panels) are graded from lowest to highest: 3-4-5-6-8-0-00-000. How are the “completely” sandblasted Autographs graded? According to sources at U. S. Operations, Savinelli USA: “completely sandblasted Autographs are graded #4 & #5”. That statement called for a follow-up e-mail to Savinelli USA with a thorough description of this pipe. The response was “Never seen a number 6 sandblast.” The Autograph 6 question was presented to one of eBay’s preeminent pipe sellers. This expert’s reply was “you have quite an unusual specimen”. . . “I can’t remember seeing any completely sandblasted Auto 6s”. . . ”may have been made in the late 1970s. . . .” The stem is a 1/8 bent and appears to be vulcanite—newer Autographs stems are advertised as acrylic. Each Autograph is uniquely designed and carved from the finest briar by one of only a chosen few, highly skilled craftsman. Autographs have often been described as creatively unique . . . "no two alike" . . . "singular" . . . "unrepeatable" . . . "as individual as your fingerprints". It is no wonder the Autograph is highly sought after by both collectors and pipe smokers. Pipe Details Nomenclature is crisp and reads: SAVINELLI (over) AUTOGRAPH (over) ITLAY (next) to the number 6. The gold Savinelli signature is found on the stem Approx. Size: Length: 6.50 in.; Weight: 65 g. /2.20 oz.; Height: 2.46 in.; Chamber Depth: 1.85 in.; Chamber Diameter: .83 in.; Outside Diameter: 1.53 in. Condition: Excellent--this pipe has been previously smoked and well cared for. It has been professionally reamed, cleaned and sanitized—ready for display or your smoking enjoyment. The faintest of teeth marks can be found, under magnification, on the underside of the stem next to the button. The Autograph Pipe Story: In the 1960s, one of Savinelli’s best and oldest craftsmen fell ill. This valued employee could no longer work at the factory full time. Achille Savinelli, Jr. (1918-1987), himself, took interest in the man’s welfare and developed a workable schedule that benefited both the employee and the pipe-making firm. Achille sent briar blocks of exceptional quality to the craftsman's home. Savinelli pipes were, until that time, traditional in shape. However, the pipe shapes for these wonderful blocks were undefined; the briar was of such quality the pipe maker dared not carve against the beautiful grain. He and Achille conferred and designed pipes according to the briar’s natural shape and grain. Together they came up with some of the best pipes ever made—thus the genesis of the Savinelli Autograph--freehand shapes in high-quality briar.
