We do not find many Spanish Colonial Crosses, most are a crucifix with a corpus on the cross; but this is a rare exception. The nuns told us that this was a Lambeau cross. It is a style cross used to signify the bearer is the eldest son and was borne whilst the father was still alive. This piece predates 1825, the date of the Spanish Revolutions in South America and is entirely original down to the bail and ring hanger. It is on consignment for auction from one of the convents we work with in Peru and it was donated to them by a wealthy family in Cuzco . Its size is 3.5 inches with bail and it weighs 29.7 grams of coin silver. It is a cast piece and we have never seen another like it! Good luck bidding!
