RARE TEAPOT STEUBEN BLANK WHEAT PAT. ABP CUT GLASS NR GLASS CUTTER / PATTERN NAME AND REFERENCES: The actual cutter of this piece in a Wheat type pattern is unknown to me. On page 70 of Pearson's Volume #2 is a signed Hawkes teapot that has the same shaped blank as mine. Steuben supplied Hawkes with many blanks and I did find a matching blank as #1957 on page 189 of the Steuben blank line drawings in The Glass Of Frederick Carder book by Gardner. I included a picture of this blank. The 5-3/4" measurement shown in the line drawing matches the main bodies width of my teapot. It is unclear what the side measurement actually is, but if it designates 6" in height it is a match to my piece. AGE: According to the Carder book the blanks started with the number 1 in 1903 and ended with number 7749 in about 1932. It also states that numbers 1-5000 were probably done before the 1920's. With this info we can date this #1957 blank to the early teens at the very latest. BLACK LIGHT TEST RESULTS: Confirms American Brilliant Period (approximately 1876-1916) MEASUREMENTS: 6" high and 9-1/2" from handle to spout WEIGHT / RING: It weighs 2.3 pounds and both pieces have a very good ring when tapped. BLANK / GLASS CLARITY: Blown / Bright and clear. CUTTING DETAILS: As you can see in my pictures the wheat type cutting is on the lid, side panels, handle, and spout. It has what I would call light to moderate depth and very good overall precision. POLISHING QUALITY: The cutting on the handle and spout was purposely left unpolished to provide contrast. The other cutting has a nice crisp look and feel. CONDITION REPORT (ALWAYS VERY PICKY): The lid is in great shape and I can't even find a pinpoint sized nick any place on it. The top rim of the pot has a few tiny very shallow flakes if you look closely. One is 1/8" in size and the other 2 are 1/16" in size. To be very picky I'll mention 5 pencil point or less sized nicks on the rim also. Naturally when the lid is in place, these are all hidden. The spout is longer than most cut down ones that you normally see out t, but still may have been touched up at one time on its tip. On the inside edge of its hole are a few pencil point sized nicks if you look very closely. The handle looks very good with no heat checks or cracks. For accuracy sake I will mention some ripples on the outside of the top application, but these don't affect its integrity at all. Other than some slight typical wear, the side and bottom of the pot looks great. The interior is clean with no sickness or residue. FINAL COMMENTS: This was an extremely hard subject to photograph well and I can assure you that in real life it looks much better. Vintage cut glass teapots are quite hard to find and are generally considered to be rare. This one combines an elegant form with eye-pleasing cutting. Grab desirable cut glass teapots like this while you still can. BIDDING FORMAT: T is no reserve with a $9 starting price. This is my favorite way to sell even high-priced items.
