Offered for auction is a rare and unusual vase by Weller Pottery and Charles Clewell. The vase is a "Glossy Bedford" and is quite rare. Charles Clewell operated a studio in Canton, Ohio between 1910 and the mid 1950's. He made two types of ware, one a solid bronze, the other a pottery base covered by a thin coating of bronze, brass, copper or silver. Clewell was not a potter and blanks from several Zanesville potteries were used as a basis for his work, Weller included. Clewell ware was never mass produced and every piece was done by Clewell himself. The result was that his wares were limited in number and now rare. The blank for this vase was the Weller "Bedford" mold. The "Bedford" was made in both matt and glossy glaze. This Clewell "Glossy Bedford" vase can be viewed in Huxford's The Collector's Encyclopedia of Weller Pottery on page 112. The vase is listed as Clewell Pottery and sharing the page is a summary of Clewell's connection to Weller. The above information was taken from this book. It's quite interesting. The condition of this vase is excellent with only small production type flaws, in one spot a fleck of darker glaze near the rim and some impressed short dark dashes that were fired over, see photos. The base has a rough unglazed spot on the bottom near a stilt mark, see photos. This is not seen when the vase is displayed. read more
