VRed DIETZ No #40 Traffic Gard Kerosene Lantern You are bidding on a DIETZ #40 Traffic Railroad? Gard Kerosene Lantern. The Lantern has a 1/4" round wick, not the flat one, the glass is not chipped or cracked. T is a need for someone to clean this, I am afraid I scour the paint off. The filler cap unscrews, the inside of the tank appears nice and clean. T is some dirt that came out of the holes near the bottom venting portion of the lantern. I would guess, with fuel, it should all work.. Below is a blurb I found regarding the DIETZ Traffic Gard Lantern. The W.C. Embury Co. first introduced the dead-flame #40 Traffic Gard lantern in 1940 and marketed it specifically for use by highway contractors, utility companies, and municipalities to warn night time drivers of road hazards. This lantern model utilized a proprietary Fresnel (pronounced "Frah-Nell") globe not used on any other lantern model. The R.E. Dietz Co. bought Embury in 1953, and resumed production of the #40 Traffic Gard lantern under the Dietz name at least into the 1960's. The early versions of the Traffic Gard used 1/4" round felt wick, was the later versions used 3/8" flat wick. After 1956, Dietz introduced the #855 Plain globe for the Traffic Gard. More information on the Traffic Gard can be found at the Kerosene Highway Traffic Lantern website. courtesy of The Kerosene
