Printed on thick hand made "wove" paper. Description We are delighted to offer an original hand colored engraving from an impressive work by Pierre Joseph Redoute (1759-1840) entitled TRAITE DES ARBRES ET ARBUSTES. This is a series of prints that were exquisitely drawn by Redouté. The work is familiarly known as the "Nouveau Duhamel," as it was issued as an homage to Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau's important eighteenth-century treatise. The prints from this work illustrate flowering trees and shrubs, delicately drawn and colored. The skillful use of stipple engraving and color printing, as well as the handsome draughtsmanship make the images Redouté's distinctive production.The celebrated botanical artist Redoute had the distinction of receiving the patronage of Marie Antoinette before the French Revolution as well as that of the Empress Josephine following the Reign of Terror.Pierre Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) was one of the most famous flower painters of all time, he was born into a Flemish painters' family, who earned a living by producing decorative and church paintings. In 1782 he went to Paris, where he initially worked as a decorative painter at the "Theatre des Italiens". In his spare time, he frequently drew in the Jardin du Roi.
