Fancy Refinished Antique Dome Top Steamer Trunk With Working Lock & Key Interior Compartment Areas, and Interior Tray This trunk is only $39.00 shipping cost to any of the lower 48 states through UPS! Canadian customers contact us for a possible shipping quote. Here is a nice refinished dome top steamer trunk from the mid to late 1800's. Here are the trunk's dimensions: from left to right across the front is 30 1/4 inches, from floor to top is approximately 25 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 18 inches. When we received this trunk, it was in need of lots of help and has come a long way since then. We have removed some of the metal from between the slat boards to expose the wood underneath. The trunk looks to be made up of pine base wood with oak or ash outer slat boards, while the dome appears to be early ply. There are character marks or distress marks on the wood in various places. These include older nicks and dings. There are also some stress cracks and areas of slight discoloration. We have shown a close up picture of a couple of stress cracks on the dome. All of these distress marks give this trunk a nice antique look or appearance. It has survived well over 100 years of existence and held up fairly well. The wood has received three coats of polyurethane by Minwax. This beautiful trunk comes with the original working lock. We have matched up a key that does activate the lock mechanism. The trunk maker has used a lot of fancy hardware while making this trunk. None of the metal on this trunk is not brass. If it were, we would have semi polished it. Since it isn't, we have brush painted it by hand in black and gold leaf. The metal on this trunk has some pitting which also contributes to it's antique look. This one also has nice cast iron front latches. Some of the edge metal was frayed away at the corners at the top. We went ahead and put in some patch metal pieces over this frayed away metal to make the trunk more complete in these areas. There is a close up picture showing one of these repaired areas. The trunk maker did a nice job of running vertical and horizontal slat boards on the exterior of this trunk. Whenever they do this, it makes the trunk a lot more fancy looking. The side handles were missing and have been replaced with Amish made black leather stitched straps. All of the leather products that we use on our trunks during the refinishing process comes from an Amish man in an Amish community here in Pennsylvania near our home. What a wonderful trunk this would make as a gift for anyone special within your life who enjoys collecting refinished antique furniture pieces for the house. This might make a fabulous storage chest at the foot of the bed in a bedroom. This trunk is sturdy enough to sit upon the top in case you need to do so while changing your clothes or putting your socks on. Going to the interior, you have the original picture and small compartment area on the underside of the top to the right. That is where you can see the blue paper, original fancy border paper, and the picture of a child riding a horse with a dog chasing after him. On the left side under the top, we have re-created the hidden compartment area by making the drop door and piece below this door. We have also added a trunk maker's style picture onto this door. You can drop this door down to store items up inside the dome on the left side. We have also made a tray that rests at the top edge. You can store smaller items within the tray, then lift it up and place more items deep inside the trunk. The interior wood and tray have received two coats of polyurethane. There are some typical stress cracks running across the bottom on the interior and the wood has some grayish discoloration, probably due to moisture many years ago.
