This is a Revolutionary War American rifle (musket) ball that was excavated on PRIVATE property in the vicinity of the King's Mountain battlefield in South Carolina. This rifle ball is approximately .58 or .59 calibre (smaller than the more common .69 caliber musket ball) and would have been used in an American rifle. It has a very pronounced casting sprue and visible seam. The Battle of King's Mountain occured in 1780 and is referred to as a "miniature civil war" as it pitted an American frontiersman militia against a Loyalist militia. This "massacre" of the "British" Loyalists proved too much for Cornwallis and he abandoned his invasion of North Carolina. Major Patrick Ferguson who commanded the Loyalist force was killed at the battle and the Patriot forces under the commands of Colonels William Campell, Issac Shelby, Jack Sevier, and Benjamin Cleveland simply annihilated the Tories. The "Over Mountain Men" showed what a bunch of determined backwoods frontierman (from present day Tennessee) could do to a group of American's that remained loyal to the Crown. This is an extremely scarce site for artifacts and I have only had a handful of relics from King's Mountain in over twenty five years. A super opportunity to preserve American history from the King's Mountain
