African artist Monday Thabethe completed the sculpture of White Rhino Running in April 2009 in our art studio in White River, South Africa.
It is carved out of an African hardwood called "leadwood" in South Africa and "ironwood" in Zimbabwe (scientific name Combretum Imberbe ). The wood is so hard that Africans made blades for their hoes from it before metal became available.
Note that the animal is not fastened or glued to the base. The sculpture AND base are ONE, hand carved out of ONE solid piece of wood. Monday's signature appears on the edge of the base (see last picture). The date 04/2009 is also etched in the wood. The artist carved a texture on the skin to resemble closely the skin of a White Rhino, the finish is a wax polish.

You can read about Monday Thabethe's life

Many sculptures and carvings carved in our studio receive high accolades from art buyers and decorators all over the world; eBay buyers also show their appreciation in their many positive feedback comments.

Such animal leadwood carvings are RARE and will contribute greatly to a serious collector of African wildlife art.

The statue's characteristics are as follows:

weight: 33 lbs / 15 kg length: 21.5 inches / 54 cm width: 11.5 inches / 29 cm height: 11 inches / 28.5 cm
