Sign up for my email newsletters by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites African artist Monday Thabethe completed the sculpture of White Rhino Running in April 2009 in our art studio in White River, South Africa.It is carved out of an African hardwood called "leadwood" in South Africa and "ironwood" in Zimbabwe (scientific name Combretum Imberbe ). The wood is so hard that Africans made blades for their hoes from it before metal became available.Note that the animal is not fastened or glued to the base. The sculpture AND base are ONE, hand carved out of ONE solid piece of wood. Monday's signature appears on the edge of the base (see last picture). The date 04/2009 is also etched in the wood. The artist carved a texture on the skin to resemble closely the skin of a White Rhino, the finish is a wax polish.
