This is a high quality hand-made ribbon mic transducer for use in Your DIY ribbon microphone project! As You might know, electric circuity of a classical ribbon microphone consists of only two parts: transducer itself and a step-up transformer. For normal studio use the third required component is just a male XLR plug and You got working and ready to use ribbon mic! Up for sale is a transducer only, XLR plug and transformer are NOT included, photo of a full working assembly is for demonstration purpose. Great performance in pro and home recording! Transformer suggestions: I know three manufacturers who have ribbon mic output transformers on stock: Edcor (), model RMX-1 (the most affordable one) Cinemag (), models CM-9887 (my favorite one) and CM-9888 Lundahl (), five models available with LL2912 being the most popular (the most expensive choice) Assembly process is very easy: 1. Solder output of the transducer (red wire) to input* of a transformer (may be referred as "Input High")2. Solder common of the transducer (black wire) to common* of transformer's input (may be referred as "Input Low)3. Solder output* of a transformer (may be referred as "Output High") to Pin-2 of XLR plug4. Solder common* of transformer's output (may be referred as "Output Low") to Pin-3 of XLR plug5. Solder transformer's screen* to Pin-1 of XLR plug. Some transformers don't have a built-in screen. If this is Your case, wrap the coil with an adhesive copper foil - it will be the screen now, solder a wire to the screen and then to Pin-1 of XLR plug. *check particular transformer's specs for pinout wire colors Tip: You should keep wires connecting transducer to transformer as short as possible, as voltage induced in the element is very low and if wiring is too long the system might be prone to electromagnetic interference. One the other hand, transformer shouldn't be too close to transducer to avoid possible saturation of its core by a strong magnetic field from neodymium magnets. The "golden middle" for optimal performance is around 1.5 - 2 inch distance between transducer and transformer.
