Lahey studied for four years with Robert Henri and George Bridgman at the Art Students League and then traveled to Europe where he continued his artistic training. He was asked to teach at the Art Students League which he did for the next ten years before becoming the head principal of the Corcoran Art School in Washington D.C. He was also a professor at Goucher College for twenty years and taught at the Laurant summer school in Ogunquit, Maine. He was in every major survey of American art during the 30’s and 40’s. He was profiled in Life magazine in article that was a overview of the best in American painting. During the depression he completed a WPA mural in Brownsville, PA.
