Absolutely stunning and scarce dual vase and candlestick from one of Finlands most exciting and talented design artists - Tamara Aladin - in a most beautiful and striking rich fire engine or pillar box red colouration. The rich and majestic red of this vase is quite mesmirising and breathtaking which highlights its striking beautifully conceived innovative design. Please excuse some of the photos whereby very strong light has washed out some of its rich overtones. Photo one is a good indication of its actual colour. I have seen this piece in the above publication stated as a candlestick whilst in the latest Riihimaki soft baked book it is clearly deemed a vase. We have always displayed the piece as a vase due to its hollow interior whilst appreciating that the piece can be upturned & used as a candlestick - please see photos 5, 6 & 7. The piece starts with a circular base rim which surrounds a deep well which can partially be seen through the vase basal region. The vase ascends to form a sublime rounded globe form with superlative arcing curvaceous side walls. The globular shape is surmounted by a series of three superb slightly flattened, doughnut shaped rings or discs which sit at equidistant intervals. A cylindrical core element is improperly perceived as the three collared rings revert to a cylinder. The later is capped by two further rings of equal size and stature. The pair of uppermost rings then revert to the aforementioned cylindrical core, before splaying out sharply to form a magical wide brimmed circular mouthrim. The mouthrim itself is also of flattened form displaying a sharper lower curvature before slightly receding to form gentle sloping arced walls. This takes the eye up to the vases superb machine highly polished plateau and mouthrim. This scarce piece from the Tamara Aladin design stable has all the quirky exuberance of the period whereby its stunning innovative shape has a certain vitality and 1960's pizzaz ! The piece was designed in 1970 and was only produced for four years until 1974 whereby this was the tallest form produced . The piece has a duality of purpose whereby I personally think it looks less top heavy and ' sits ' better as a vase. The piece is both striking and utilitarian whereby the vase can easily stand alone as a perfect example of Tamara's innovative, confident design skills that took her undoubted talents to worldwide awareness and acclaim. The vase is medium walled whereby both natural and unnatural light glimmers and glistens from its mouth, its globular base and no less to the striking set of five rings or discs. The vase has immense character and stature with its exquisitely shaped collars perfectly dissecting the vases main cylindrical form from its globe like lower element. Tamara's pieces are now collected as avidly as her named designs such as this whereby this outstanding Finnish design artist has achieved a deserved worldwide status for an amazing body of work dating back to the early sixties. Tamara Aladin was born in 1932 of Finnish origin whereby she studied at the University of Art & Design in Helsinki from 1951 to 1954. She worked for a short period for Arabia and even as an air hostess for Finnair . Joining Riihimaki as a freelance designer in 1959 she was respected by her employers and contemporaries alike. Her notable contemporaries include Nanny Still , Helena Tynell and Aimo Okkolin whereby although entire books have been written about her peers, very little is known about her, as she was very reserved and shunned any limelight or attention. Therefore little is known of her life’s influences and career beyond a few basic details. She is best known for a multitude of ranges including Kehra, Amuletti, Ruusu, Tornado, Kleopatra and the much acclaimed Hurricane series.
