ROBERTO LUPETTI (Listed California/Italy 1917-1997). Still life with Vase, Grapes, Apples and Tangerine, 16” x 20” oil on canvas (framed size: 30” x 33”) signed lower right: Roberto Lupetti. The liner is velvet and has some light discolorations. The frame has some nicks and one gash on inner right edge of frame. Frame is heavy. Biography from the Archives of askART Italian born Lupetti earned five degrees from the Italian Royal Academy of Fine Arts, was a team member for the refurbishment of the Vatican's Sistine Chapel, and immigrated to the U.S after World War II. Known for his Renaissance art and large murals, he created a few western genre pieces, including a Day in the Life of A Cowboy (5) 5'x10' murals were painted oil on masonite in 1959. He was born in 1917. He painted very few seascapes, preferring to paint scenes of fishermen on ships, usually in a storm setting. He lived all his life in America on the west coast, mostly in Carmel and Carmel Valley. Biography from the Archives of askART Born in Milan, Italy on Dec. 6, 1918. Lupetti studied at the Royal Academy in Rome and was apprenticed to the school of restoration at the Vatican. Following service in WWII, he moved to San Francisco where he taught at the Art Institute. As well as decorating churches throughout the U.S., he also painted portraits of such celebrities as Ingrid Bergman, Barbara Stanwyck, and General George Marshall. Roberto Lupetti(Italian, b. 1918 - 1997)Roberto Lupetti was born in 1918 in Milan, Italy, and was raised in an environment that nurtured creativity (his father was an acclaimed music and art critic who socialized with such celebrated personalities as Puccini, Toscanini, Mascagni, Gioreno, Palanti and Dechirico). At the age of fourteen he was accepted to the Brera Liceo Artistico, one of Italy’s most prestigious art academies where he learned the techniques established by the great Renaissance painters. Of the four years spent there, the first two were devoted solely to drawing, adhering to Michaelangelo’s principle that an artist needed above all to learn the skill of drawing. Thus, countless hours were spent studying and putting into practice the concepts of perspective, design, anatomy, composition and color. At the end of the four years, Lupetti graduated with honors. The demands of the school had taken their toll—his class had dwindled from four hundred to sixty students, and only the best were allowed to finish.Upon graduating, Lupetti entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. The Academy’s strict curriculum perfected his skills to the highest degree of professionalism. While a student there, he was offered a position to help restore the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel. An opportunity given to a select few, Lupetti worked directly on the famed fresco, removing decades of accumulated dirt and dust and checking the ceiling for cracks. Lupetti comments, "As I climbed the scaffolding, I realized the genius of Michaelangelo was breathing down upon me. With each step upward, the figures enlarged and the brush strokes became more powerful. I can still recall the whirlwind of energy that penetrated every cell of my body". Once the restoration was successfully completed, the young artist was invited to do similar work on the immense fresco The Battle of Ponte Miluio by Giulio Roman, a disciple of Raphael.
