BOUGHT AS AN UNWANTED GIFT ROLLS ROYCE, "SPIRIT OF ECSTASY" DESK ORNAMENT/PAPERWEIGHT. SCALE 1/1. This is a beautiful, modern day desk ornament of the famous Rolls Royce "Spirit of Ecstasy" statue, the original of which, was reputed to be modelled on a young lady by the name of Eleanor Velasco Thornton. Eleanor was a young beauty who posed, on many occasions, for the sculptor, Charles Robinson Sykes. The second Lord Montagu of Beaulieu, in 1908, purchased a Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, and the forerunner of "The Spirit of Ecstasy" (known as 'The Whisper') was commissioned by Lord Montagu, as a bonnet mascot for his new car. The sculptor he chose to carry out the work was Charles Sykes. This, eventually, led to the commissioning of "The Spirit of Ecstasy", by Rolls Royce, as their official bonnet mascot. The model you are now viewing measures 3.3/4" (9.1/2cms) in height. It is made from cast alloy metal, which is then chromium plated. It stands on a silver-coloured, satin-finish, circular base. The model is of superb quality and comes beautifully presented, in a very attractive, red-grained, gift box with a hinged lid, which is secured by a magnetic clasp. The box is lined with gold-coloured satin. It would make a perfect birthday, retirement, or presentation gift. Or maybe just as a treat for yourself, to use as a desk ornament read more
