Beautiful authentic bronze As minted in Gades (Cadiz) Roman Hispanica, 100-20 B.C. Gades or Cadiz, in the region of Andalusia, is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Spain. Founded as "Gadir" by Phoenicians from Tyre, Cadiz is possibly the most ancient city still standing in Western Europe. The city came under the sway of Carthage after the first Punic War, and fell to the Romans under Scipio Africanus in 206 B.C. Under the Roman Republic and Empire it flourished as a naval base known as Gades. During the Age of Exploration, Cadiz became the home port of the Spanish Treasure Fleets which off-loaded gold and silver from the New World to be transported up the Guadalquivir river to the Mint of Seville. Displaying Roman, Greek and Punic influences in its minting, this example features a fantastic natural patina - very scarce like this!! Obverse, head of Hercules left wearing lion's skin. Reverse, two tuna fish swimming left. Punic (Phoenician) legends above and below. The photos above were taken of the exact coin you will receive. Comes in a crystal-clear "Air-Tite" hard Plastic capsule, suitable for long term storage and display. Diameter, 27 mm. Weight, 10.45 grams. Composition, bronze.
