Kilburn, a 997 ton wooden vessel with a 1,000 horsepower Fulton) triple-expansion engine built by Bendixsen at Fairhaven, Calif. in 1904, was sold by the Maritime Investment Co. of San Francisco to the North Pacific Steamship Co. for Portland- San Francisco service. By 1909, the NPSC was operating four ships. The George W. Elder and Roanoke worked its primary route from Portland, via Eureka and San Francisco to Los Angeles. The F.A. Kilburn ran between Eureka and San Francisco and the Eureka operated along the Oregon coast, connecting Portland, Astoria, Coos Bay and Eureka. In 1912 the Kilburn was damaged by a fire which broke out at sea while the vessel was about 25 miles south of Point Arena. Eventually holes were chopped through to the engine room from above and the fire was extinguished. The battered Kilburn reached Eureka, California under her own power.
