Beautiful Egyptian Beaded N.K. Necklace enlargement Relics of the Nile is very pleased to present this superb rare ancient Egyptian necklace composed of New Kingdom faience tubular beads (read below for information regarding how the beads were made). The beads are multi-colored and are brilliant in every way, displaying colors of red, white, very bright blue, green, rust, and more! The thick blue and green faience was extremely popular during this period. The length of the necklace measures a very nice 17" in length. The piece has been restrung and fitted with a modern clasp in the ancient style to make it completely wearable if desired. The style features a lovely double strand style with tubular beads running side by side, and held together with double faience spacers. This is a very nice and intricately woven style that displays beautifully. This style is radiant in color and design and looks much as it originally did 3,300 years ago! The color of the beads cannot be understated and remains completely brilliant and forms a magnificent display. The beads on this piece dates from the New Kingdom,(1,500 - 1,070 B.C.) during the reign of the Pharaohs such as Ramesses, Tutankhamun, and the monotheistic King Akhenaten (Amenhotep IV) and his wife Nefertiti. FAIENCE INFORMATION: Faience was a glassy manufactured substance of the ancient Egyptians. The process developed by the artisans may have been prompted by a desire to imitate highly prized turquoise, although t was a great diversity of color in faience. The usual Egyptian faience was composed of a quartz or crystal base, covered with a vitreous, alkaline compound with calcium silicates to provide the colors and the glassy finish. The Egyptians colled faience "tjehenet". FURTHER INFORMATION: Jewelry was of vital importance in ancient Egypt. It served as the support for protective amulets and elaborate decoration in life and in death. Wealther Egyptians easily could have hundreds of beadwork jewelry pieces to adorn themselves to impress other Egyptians and the gods for every occassion. This is a wonderful opportunity at a superb artifact. AMARNA BEAD INFORMATION: "Cane Beads: To make these the glass was made into a rod or tube which was called a cane. These canes were sometimes made of one glass only; at other times they were made of different coloured glasses arranged in a pattern. To make a bead, a cane, usually tubular, was selected of approximately the same diameter as the bead requireed. A piece the length of the bead was cut off this cane. In some cases this was used as a bead without any further work on it. In other cases it was finished by either grinding or reheating. The method of making tubular canes is of some interest... small glass tubes have been found... in the glass factory at Tel el Amarna which dates from the XVIIIth dynasty. By examining fragments of these I have been able to trace the method of their manufacture. A strip of glass of cinsiderable thickness, and wide enoutgh to fold round a wiere, was, wilst in a plastic condition, folded round and the edges fused together so as to make a tube... These were sometimes reheated and pulled out into small tubular canes, such as those found at Tel el Amarna. Pieces broken from these make long cylindrical beads, and a necklace entirely consisting of such beads simply broken offcanes has been found in a New Kingdom grave at Abydos." H.C.
