This is a Ruby Red Glass... medium sized Berry Bowl... in the "Pinwheel" pattern... made by the "new" L. E. Smith Glass Company. I identify this as a "new" Smith Glass piece because the factory has just recently reopened... and this Berry Bowl is from one of it's first "turns" of glass. They are calling this glass color and finish their... "Ruby Red Luster". The color in this Bowl fades in and out of intensity. In some areas it's an exceptionally deep dark Ruby Red... and in other areas I see patches of a light Golden Amber. Should we get "reckless" and call this Amberina Glass???... Or was this just a "fluke" in production that has given us these results???... The Carnival Glass finish adds fleeting rainbows of color... and sparkle and luster across the surface of the Bowl. It stands just a bit over 3 and 3/4 inches tall... 7 and ½ inches across the top... and appears to be in very nice condition. The "body glass" is fairly thick on this Bowl... reminiscent of glassware made by the Imperial Glass Company... and advertised as... "substantial enough for everyday use". Even though it is unmarked as to maker... we do know L. E. Smith Glass Company made this Bowl. The Company is under new management... and from what I understand... with all new employees. I'm sure that during the two years the company was closed down the unemployed workers were forced to find new jobs... and most would be reluctant to return to a fledgling enterprise... with no promise of a secure future. In a tour through the factory... ( I was t in the summer of 2005 )... I was dismayed to see the lack of talent on hand. It was quite evident in the few new pieces coming forth... that this new endeavor has a long way to go... to regain the level of quality... and productivity... achieved in the past. We cheer them on... and wish them the best. But you never know... these early pieces from extremely small runs... and lacking in the quality we have come to expect from this company... may very well be highly sought after in the future!!!... The collecting fraternity is a fickled bunch... and you never know for sure what will "tickle their fancy"!!!... I'm one of them... so I should know!!!... I'm told that t are two "books" in the making... covering both the history of this company... and the glassware they produced over the years. When... and if... these books reach the market... we will do our best to make them available to our collector friends. The original L. E. Smith Glass Company opened for business in 1907... and after 97 years of continuous production... closed in early July of 2004. They were a prolific producer with a vast inventory of molds... many commissioned by the company... and many that were acquired as other glass makers closed down. We are hoping... that with new management... they will once again be a force to be reckoned with... tapping their stash of century old molds... to make available once again... for new and advanced collectors alike... these treasures form the past.
