This auction is for one (1) vintage, turn-of-the-century advertising piece: a tin egg separator give away from RUMFORD BAKING POWDER, Providence, R.I.! This treasure is in fairly great condition, with only tarnish as an issue, as to be expected from a century+ of use. (Two tiny spots of rust on back, but no dents, bends, or scratches.) Fantastic gem, it is an absolutely wonderful example of early advertising history! Embossed on front, encircling outer edge: ~ RUMFORD ~ BAKING POWDER. A gotta-have addition for the collectors of advertising pieces, vintage kitchen items, Rhode Island memorabilia, or interesting historical pieces in general. Two men, Eben Horsford and George Wilson, began a chemical manufacturing company, originally named "George F. Wilson and Co." By 1856, they were shipping world wide from their building in Providence, R.I. 1858 saw them building the first factory, under the new business name, Rumford Chemical Works, which eventually grew to become one of the largest and most successful chemical plants in this country. (No, the basis for the new company name is not known.) Actually, t were several chemists at the time experimenting with alternate leavening agents, trying to avoid the use of yeast and sour milk, etc. Cream of tartar (a by-product of the wine making industry) was one (eventually) successful alternative. read more
