Russel Wright Steubenville Pitcher in Seafoam American Modern was the first mass-produced "designer" dinnerware, targeted to middle-class affluence--to people who valued form, but were still conscious of practical function and affordability. The line was a hit from the start, and in 1941 won the American Designers' Institute Award for best ceramic design of the year. The Russel Wright dinnerware's success was the lifeblood of Steubenville for nearly twenty years. Despite the success of the line, the company's financial difficulties forced it to close in 1959. This pitcher is a beautiful vintage piece in Seafoam, one of the original six colors introduced in 1939; in the early 1950's Seafoam was discontinued and replaced with the Cedar Green color. Seafoam continues to be the most sought after of the original colors. Typical of the American Modern dinnerware, t is crazing and some lack of uniformity in the glaze, which does not detract from the overall appearance. The porous nature of the clay and the instability of the glaze caused crazing, often before the dinnerware was used. The crazing is somewhat uniform and is in long lines, however, it has not absorbed dirt; no chips, cracks or repairs.
