Caution venomous snake! Thissterling silver coin displays a dangerous snake named the Levant Blunt-nosed Viper. I could not find this coin in the Standard Catalog of World Coins, but I did find it on two sites after an intensive search on the internet. The coin was issued by the Central Bank of Russia for the Russian Red Data Book. The coin weighs 17.0 grams and purity is 15.55 grams. On the obverse is the usual two-headed eagle, lettering at top of eagle is ‘Two Roubles”, at feet of eagles is ‘Bank of Russia,’ date of issuance 2010, 15.55, and emblem for St. Petersburg Mint on the right; on the left is Ag 925. On the reverse at top is name of snake “Blunt-nosed Viper.” The mintage was 7,500. This snake is a subspecies (geographic variety) of the Blunt-nosed Viper that occurs in North Africa, much of the Middle East, and as far east as Kashmir. This subspecies is endemic to Asia ranging from Central Turkey to northern Pakistan and Kashmir. The Caucasus is a mountainous region on border of Asia and Europe between the Black and Caspian Sea. The northern part is under jurisdiction of Russia and the southern part consists of independent sovereign states such as Armenia.
