Russian Navy Badge Commemorating the Nuclear Submarine K-266 Orel .High quality, two-piece construction, BIG badge in brass and enamels, with a pendant. Measures approx.43 mm tall, 40.5 mm wide. The upper portion of the badge features double-headed eagle national emblem with Russian naval flag in the center. The name of the sub (which means "Eagle" in Russian) is inscribed on the blue scroll. Note that it is written in the Old Slavonic style, the way it would be spelled prior to the 1917 Revolution and Bolshevik-driven simplification of Russian language.The badge is in VERY GOOD condition. There are just a few minor scuffs to the paint, not very detractive. The gold and silver finishes are nice and bright. Comes with fully functional screw back attachment, complete with mint marked screw plate.K-266 OREL is a nuclear submarine of Project 949A Antey (NATO Classification: Oscar II Class). From 1991-1993 she was known as K-266 Severodvinsk , but was renamed Orel in March 1993. While in dock at the Zvezdochka shipyard (Severodvinsk, Russia) on 7 April 2015, it was reported that a fire broke out "in the ninth section of the sub close to the stern". The fire was caused by insulation materials catching fire during welding. It was reported the submarine did not have nuclear weapons or fuel on board at the time.
