Working the "bird beat" has been an integral part of the Service's law enforcement mission for over a century. Once known as "duck cops," the Nation's first Federal wildlife officers were often themselves hunters who recognized the need to protect waterfowl and other migratory birds for future generations. Dedicated conservationist, they willingly put themselves in harm's way to protect migratory birds.Service special agents today still play a vital role in protecting these resources, They investigate crimes against birds that range from illegal hunting and feather trafficking to avian electrocutions, pesticides misuse, and devastating oil spills. Fines and penalties paid for these and other violations of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act are deposited in the North American Wetlands Conservation Fund for use in protecting and preserving habitat for waterfowl and other species.
