This is the second and last of two lots I will be offering today of original structural pieces from U.S. Navy blimps. These items were salvaged by me in the late 1970s from a large unimproved section of land, referred to as the "Conservation Area," at old U.S. Naval Air Station, Lakehurst, NJ. Scattered among the scrub grass and pine trees in this sandy area west of the main base and the huge airship hangars were pieces of wreckage from the blimp M-4, including the remains of the control car and pieces of the tail fin framework, as well as nose cones and other debris from various blimps that I could not identify.Dominating this array of wreckage was the control car of the M-4, one of only four ships of this type built and the last blimps built by Goodyear for the navy in WWII. The car had been stripped of avionics and major interior installations, including engines. The other M-4 wreckage included large sections from the four huge tail fins and the control surfaces. Most of the silver-doped cotton fabric was gone from these, but small sections of it clung to some of the girders.The M-4 was moored out on the west field at Lakehurst for a mooring test on February 17, 1958 when a storm blew the un-manned ship off the mast.
