Up for auction is a pencil-signed and pencil-numbered original etching by Salomon Van Abbé, A.R.E. (UK 1883-1955) nominally titled Fishmonger. Platemarked image measure 10" x 10"; frame 18" x 16.25". I have not examined this print out of frame. The exposed sheet does show age-related toning and perhaps some "burn" at the outer edge from contact with old non-archival matting. Print shows deep color in its ink. This is a true etching; under a loupe the ink lines are raised. This print appears to be good to very good condition. Numbered 8/50 lower left under image and signed center under image. van Abbe moved to England from Holland quite young and went on to study art at the People's Palace, Bolt Court, Toynbee Hall, and later at the Central London School of Art and did illustrations for authors such as H.G. Wells and John Galsworthy. Known for his work in the drypoint medium and his sense of satire and humor in the presentation of legal prints and British middle-class behavior during the early part of the twentieth century. Acquired from a CT estate, this framed etching is sold as is, as described. Piece will be shipped USPS Priority Mail; shipping weight will be 6 pounds. Please add $5 handling. CT residents add 6.35% sales tax. Insurance mandatory for purchases over $100. Int'l bidders be aware we state value same as insured value; read more
