Saloon with STAR BREWERY'S HOP-GOLD BEER Sign , real photo postcard by unidentified photographer, ca. 1909. This superb, sharp, detailed real photo postcard shows a rustic Saloon in Houlton, Oregon OR , about 1909. Nine patrons relax on the saloon's front porch with bartender Frank Kelly , who wrote the message on reverse and thoughtfully marked an X above his head and established the location as Houlton, Oreg. Note the great sign advertising STAR BREWERY'S HOP-GOLD BEER ~ PORTLAND, ORE. and VANCOUVER, WASH. , mounted on the post at left - please see the detail scan below . Also note the coiled lariat on the floor near the center of the image. The Star Brewery had its beginnings in Fort Vancouver, Washington when young German-American brewer Henry Weinhard bought the Vancouver Brewery from its founder, John Muench. Weinhard sold the brewery to Anton Young in 1862, and by 1890 the brewery was operating in both Vancouver, Washington and Portland, Oregon and the name had been changed to the Star Brewery . In 1904, it was purchased by the Northern Brewery Company, but they continued to call it the Star Brewery and also continued production of its popular Hop Gold Export Beer . Houlton, OR is in Columbia County . Postally used, postmarked 1909 at Houlton. Divided back, 3 3/8" x 5 3/8". AZO stamp box (points up) visible below stamp dates read more
