Just try and put yourself into the ears of the Europeans who were listening to this music with rapt and amazed attention for the first time way back in 1925 and 1929. Those Europeans were surely set back on their musical prejudices and emerged from the theatres with wholly new perceptions of the possibilities of music - and a profound appreciation of the wild new American sound - JAZZ! are some excerpts from the cover notes, which, in fact, cover the back: "It's hard to believe that the vibrant, swinging sounds of the Sam Wooding orchestra, as documented in these historic recordings, are not as familiar to connoisseurs of early jazz as contemporary recordings by the Duke Ellington or Fletcher Henderson bands. "That happens to be the case, however, because Wooding made his history 3000 miles from home, and its documentation is first reaching our shores now, over 40 years later (1971). "In 1925 the show, called "The Chocolate Kiddies", opened at the Admiral Palast in Berlin with Wooding's band playing By the Waters of the Minnetonka , as an overture. 'T was a stillness after we finished the overture,' recalls Wooding, 'then, like a clap of thunder, the audience started banging their feet and shouting - Bis Nochmal Hoch, BRAVO! - and the din was so great that -Bis- sounded like -Beast- to us , and some of the boys were about to run out of the orchestra pit before we realized they were being complimentary. I knew it would be smooth sailing after that, because By the Waters of the Minnetonka was not our best selection.' "After 75 performances in Berlin, the Chocolate Kiddies Revue moved on to further triumphs at Hamburg's Thalia Theatre and Copenhagen's Cirkus. The reviewers were wild enthusiastic and confused.
