This is a fine, older ROLEX sandblasted formal black "opera" pipe as it has been often called. It was made by Brebbia, one of Italy's premier pipe makers since 1953. I am not sure when Brebbia first started making the Rolex, but this is one of the early ones because it has one of the older, vulcanite thick, round stems. Later models of the Rolex have been fitted with a saddlebit stem that is more prone to damage and breakage. This pipe's fat, round stem is strong and sturdy and aesthetically gives the pipe a more rounded and more handsome look. This is a nice, light pipe attesting to the excellent curing of the briar in it over the extra decades. Brebbia pipes are hand finished and so is this Rolex. They have been made for the past 30-40 years and are difficult to date with the exception of the older stem that this one has and the newer thinner stems. The pipe had been smoked when I found it and had been stored for several years. The original finish has been treated with a coat of caranuba wax. The push-style mouthpiece has no teeth marks but does have a little residual oxidation from all its years of storage. This remaining oxidation will slowly disappear if the stem of the pipe is rubbed with a little olive oil from time to time.
