Sansui 4000 is a classic vintage solid-state stereo receiver (tuner-amplifier) made in Japan. The output power (RMS) is rated very conservatively at 45 Watt per channel. The receiver weighs about 35 lbs (quite a bit heavier than you would expect for 45 Watt per channel), which attests to its heavy-duty build quality and plenty of reserve headroom (power) to pump out sweet, sweet music.This particular Sansui 4000 comes in a great-looking wood case instead of the usual all-metal case. The wood case is not perfect due to age and use (a few minor scuffs mostly out of plain sight, one somewhat deep scratch on one side, and a few minor scratches), but I did strip the veneer topcoat and treated the wood with some oil and wax to restore the luster . Now the wood case is rich-looking and shiny, and the treatment really hides the defects, as you can see from the pictures. (If you are into utter perfection, you can make this wood case look absolutely perfect by doing a deeper re-finish job, since it has no major defects). The unit is completely clean and is in very good cosmetic shape (save for age-normal wear). All the knobs, buttons, and surfaces are clean and shiny and full of luster. The face of the unit is beautiful to look at. There are only a couple of scratches on the metal part of the face - around the PHONES jack and near the SPEAKER selector knob. To me, those scratches do not stand out, but I'm putting it here for full disclosure. The unit is also thoroughly clean on the inside, as you can see from the pictures. There is some pitting on the chrome-plated insides of the unit (one of the pictures shows this upon close inspection), but that does not affect exterior cosmetics. The unit is fully functional and has been given a thorough check-up and lubrication to ensure up-to-spec operation. Both stereo channels are full and even. Several voltage test points have been measured (particularly around the four large capacitors and power output stages) and are within spec in accordance with the Service Manual. Every button, knob, and selector has been cleaned and lubed and has a smooth pleasant feel, with quiet normal operation. To my knowledge, the only operational defect is the tuner needle does not light up in the FM mode (although it does light up in the AM mode). I did not see that as a problem, since the tuner needle is very much visible, and I did not want to mess up the delicate tuner needle by replacing that tiny lamp. Every other lamp in the unit, however does work, and the tuning dial is fully backlit during AM/FM tuner operation (it is not lit when the receiver is not in AM or FM mode, which is normal). Both meters on the face of the unit -- the tuning signal strength meter and the tune meter -- work as they should and are both backlit . They help you optimize the signal of your radio station as you turn the tuning knob. The tuning knob itself has a fine, smooth feel to it and operates quietly.This receiver sounds fantastic. It has a lot of power and a lot of character. The music sounds rich, full, and lively with "bass" and "treble" set in their center (zero) positions, but depending on the speakers you use and how you prefer to hear your music, "bass" and "treble" help you add some coloration. Overall, Sansui 4000 is a very solid performer and great reputation among those who appreciate vintage audio equipment. This level of quality and craftsmanship is difficult to beat.
