For your Consideration :One Restored, Upgraded, and Modified Sansui TU-717 AM/FM Stereo Tuner A simply fantastic model. There's nothing not to like about this tuner. The best of all worlds: great looks, great selectivity, great sensitivity, and best of all great sounding. Q. Why not leave this unit stock? A. One word, potential . This unit has the capability of being better than any stock unit on the planet in modified form. Capacitors Q. Why change out the capacitors? A. Electrolytic capacitors age over time and typically dry out or worse, leak. This unit is 32 years old, expecting the capacitors to perform in top form is unrealistic and expecting it to last another 32 years is naive. Today's capacitors outperform capacitors made 30 years ago head to head anyway so even if they are performing in spec, quality capacitors made today should easily surpass the abilities of the capacitors of yesteryear. Each and every polarized electrolytic capacitor, more than 50 in total (see photo of old capacitors) were removed and replaced with new, carefully selected, high quality replacements. A blend of higher than stock value Panasonic FM, Panasonic FC, Nichicon HE, and Nichicon PW series were used in general purpose areas. Audio grade Elna RMS Silmic II were used throughout the audio path. The Elna Silmic II series capacitors were chosen in part because they closely resemble the properties of the no longer available Black Gate capacitors. High quality polypropylene capacitors were used in key areas of the signal path where they would fit. Matched Ceramic Filters with sockets New 3 pin sockets were added to each of the four ceramic filter locations and then new matched Murata filters were added. Two 280Khz and two180Khz filters (see photo) were used. This combination provides the unit with phenomenal performance in both wide and narrow modes. This combination allows for great signal strength in wide mode and great channel selectivity, even with pesky adjacent stations, in narrow mode with only the slightest sacrifice in gain. The 3 pin sockets allow great solder free convenience should you feel the need to change them. Power Supply / Power Transformer The rectifier diodes of the power supply were replaced with modern Schottky diodes for lower noise and faster performance, improving dynamics and bass response. A hardier power transistor with new thermal compound was added to improve the stability and reliability of the unit. The remaining power board transistors were also replaced to ensure long life. The output voltage was then dialed in to exacting requirements. The stock transformer has been lifted off the chassis and electrically isolated to remove it as a potential noise source. VD1212 Diodes These little diodes have a bad reputation for being flaky and unreliable. All of them were replaced with more reliable replacements. Wiring One of the weaknesses of the stock TU-717 is the long AC wiring path that runs to the power switch from the back to front and back again right along the chassis (see photo). This wring was replaced by higher quality twisted wiring that results in less EMI noise potential. Measurements were taken to ensure the correct polarity of the stock, unpolarized power cord. A diagram will be provided to ensure that the new owner is properly plugged in with the correct polarity. Chokes Two ferrite chokes were added, one to the power cord and one to the signal output (see photo). The chokes filter sources of RF and EMI.that might be introduced by your other household electronics and appliances. These can easily be removed to suit personal tastes and needs. RCA Connections New, gold plated RCA connectors were added (see photo) to ensure a quality connection to your interconnects and will remain corrosion free for many, many years. Lamps The original lamps remain in this unit as they look and work great.
